Q: What is sole arbitrator in Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 ?

Ans: Thw Arbitrator is appointed under section 11 of Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. The sole Arbitrator can be appointed if the both the parties give consent for the appointment of sole arbitrator.  

According to section 2(1)(d) of Arbitration and Conciliation Act,  1996, arbitral tribunal” means a sole arbitrator or a panel of arbitrators. 

These arbitrators have quasi-judicial authority because they act as private judges in civil matters.
